The new chapter of ‘Past, Present, and Future’: raw materials and interconnection

PAST - PRESENT - FUTURE
Every trend-setting activity, like fashion, is by its nature future-oriented. However, looking at the future doesn’t imply neglecting the importance of history and tradition.
A few months ago we launched the newsletter series ‘Past, Present, and Future’, in which we describe how the services that Goretti offers to fashion brands are becoming increasingly comprehensive and customised and how they rely on evolving skills, integrated with new methodologies and cutting-edge technologies. This new chapter focuses especially on the future, since it tells about raw materials and their storage, as well as about interconnection – a technological aspect which is becoming increasingly important nowadays.
If you missed the first newsletter of ‘Past, Present, and Future’ on cutting techniques’ evolution through time, you can read it here.
Now, let’s have a closer look at the past, the present and the future of raw materials supply and storage. These two phases are essential for Goretti’s work. The production of fashion applications often requires huge amounts of components, even thousands in the case of rhinestones and studs!
Therefore, being able to manage components through a storage system which ensures well-organised and fast operations – in other words, a space to place, organise and catalogue every component needed to realise applications – is crucial for the company. Such a system should help increase the speed of production and better manage the components’ supply.
The need for such a solution comes from Goretti’s commitment to expand and constantly improve its services by acquiring new expertise and implementing new methodologies in order to meet the needs of its clients and their innovative projects. That’s why the progress that we’ve made so far has focused not only on the final stages of production, but also on raw materials supply.
THE PAST AND PRESENT OF WAREHOUSE: SHELVING
Therefore, we would like to explain you how our company went from cataloguing through simple shelving to increasingly using automated warehouses.
However, as it’s always the case, new methods and technologies do not completely replace the old ones, but complement them instead. Shelving is still used for some kinds of raw materials: in these cases staff members directly take care of most of the material management and supply operations.
THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE: AUTOMATED VERTICAL WAREHOUSE
At Goretti we love working for beauty, always ensuring high quality. This commitment has been rewarded with a continuous production growth and growth – in turn – paved the way to many new opportunities, allowing the company to expand the range of materials at its disposal.
So every year, when developing the new samples to present at trade shows, our Èstro Lab style studio works hard to search for and carefully select new materials (leather, fabrics, rhinestones, stones, studs, etc.) in line with the latest fashion trends. This requires an accurate and efficient cataloguing of all – old and new – components.
To meet these needs, along with the ones related to production, over time we provided our plants with automated vertical warehouses. In particular, we currently have two models available: Kardex storage facilities – of which we own four – and Modula storage facilities – of which we own seven. Vertical storage systems make warehouse operations easier, help reduce floor space, accelerate pick up operations and ensure that operators are safe and at a proper distance from one another. Furthermore, these modern stock management systems allow an extremely precise control of the various activities, also enabling to more accurately store materials in warehouses.
Both the systems we use are automated and equipped with customised software. Their internal trays allow to orderly place and catalogue all the materials at our disposal. Kardex systems have about 30 trays on the inside and were the first to be implemented in our plants, whereas Modula systems can contain up to 60 trays. By using these cutting-edge technologies we were able to make our warehouses extremely efficient: we can quickly check the amount of available components and the date of the last inventory, i.e. the date in which a specific component was picked up.
All trays and warehouses are very large, which allows us to orderly store rhinestones, stones and studs, so that they can be quickly selected and picked up.
GORETTI’S TECHNOLOGICAL PRESENT AND FUTURE: INTERCONNECTION
In choosing its new machines, Goretti is guided by one of the pillars of its technological vision: interconnection. This term refers to the evolution of digital technologies towards a new industrial model in which facilities, people and information cooperate in an increasingly deep synergy, both within the plants and along the value chain.
Supporting the digitalisation of processes by letting machines communicate with one another and integrating them with the production management system leads to increased efficiency and offers workers the chance to acquire new expertise.
A great advantage derives from such an approach: the opportunity to provide a increasingly customised service and to in-source operations while ensuring the highest confidentiality – two very important aspects for customers in the fashion sector.
Automated warehouses, in particular, are able to communicate with one another and also with other operating machines. This allows to easily identify the materials needed and to know where they can be found in the warehouse.
Obviously, all this is made possible by a specific reference person who, by searching for an item’s name, is able to retrieve every information about the material available in-house in the fastest way.
